PFTP Free Bike Program

Pedals for the People (PFTP) improves access to complete bicycles, parts, accessories and service for those who experience barriers to affordable forms of transportation. Through the help of volunteers and donors, we refurbish bikes and provide repairs for people facing financial barriers. This popular initiative brings together members of our community to donate funding, time, energy, and care for one another.

Who is an ideal recipient?

The intent of this program is to provide affordable, sustainable transportation to members of our community who would otherwise be without it. Specifically people who are experiencing severe or ongoing financial crises or hardship in their lives that affects their overall wellbeing and their ability to obtain a bicycle.

How can I help?

We encourage anyone to support the program by volunteering at Our Community Bikes and by donating your bicycles, parts, accessories, and financial resources.

how to apply

Image
  1. Access the application form
  • Visit Our Community Bikes in-person to pick up a paper copy;
  • Print this application form; or
  • Apply online here
  1. Include a referral letter with your application

Ask for a referral letter confirming you face financial barriers from a social service agency, a health and recovery service, or a community organization.

  1. Submit your application

Submit it as a paper copy to Our Community Bikes or email to pedalsforthepeople@ourcommunitybikes.org.

Once your application is processed and approved, you will be placed on a waitlist to receive the next available bike that fits your specifications.

We do our best to provide applicants with a bike that matches their style preferences, but are unable to provide BMX bikes, adult trikes, full suspension bikes, and folding bikes.

  1. Pick up your bicycle

Once you receive notice, your bike can be picked up within two (2) weeks. Because we have very limited storage space, bikes that are not claimed within the two-week period will be assigned to the next person on our list.

Looking for a kids bike?
Our program primarily provides adult bikes. While we do take applications for kids and youth bikes, our access to kids and youth bikes is limited and the wait time is often longer. We recommend also reaching out to the following organizations:
